Music and Stars

rejoice music and stars

I have taken the plunge and decided to do a mixed media art course online. This is the first art piece, which is actually the warm-up, where there was an introduction to colors and the color wheel. It’s just meant to be an intuitive piece and the words I came up with as my message to this piece are written within the hearts, “My heart is hidden away with you. You rejoice over me with singing.” Part of this comes from the Bible verse, “He will rejoice over you with gladness, He will renew you with His love, He will rejoice over you with singing.” I love this verse. It makes me think about how God’s love for me is not far off and based on religious rituals, but He feels for me as an Earthly parent would feel for their young child.

Only you (triple Gogyohka)

Only You

I used to try and find satisfaction in so many things – people, money, material possessions, stimulants, etc. All of these things proved to be just like candy though. They were sweet for a time, but in the end left me empty and malnourished.

I think all of humanity longs for deep satisfaction and wholeness. To be complete. To be at peace. To be accepted and loved. Who wouldn’t want these things?

Where do you look for satisfaction and peace?  Have you found acceptance and love? Do you feel whole and complete?

A Gogyohka is a Japanese micro-poetry form consisting of five lines and no rhyming sequence.

This poem is in response to a year long project called Take Me Deeper, where I am moderating the writing/poetry group for an international faith based group of artists at His Kingdom Come. If you would like to be a part of this group, all you need to do is click on the link and join. We’d love to have you.

Coram Deo

Praise Girl - Coram Deo2

Coram Deo is a latin expression and means, “before the face of God”.  It implies that my entire life is constantly lived before Him. It takes away the idea of the separation of the secular and the sacred.

The word secular refers to a state that is worldly rather than spiritual and is not related either to religion, spiritual matters or to a religious body, for instance secular music or secular buildings (source).  I would like to add that secular activities would include education, work, taking a shower, eating a meal with my family, chores around the house, etc.

Sacred means to be devoted or dedicated to a deity or to some religious purpose; consecrated (source).  In other words, church attendance, worship services, prayer, outward religious acts, etc.

I don’t consider myself to be religious, but someone who has a relationship with her creator that is intimate, vibrant and real.  As a Christian, I believe that the way to God is through relationship, and that we were created with that purpose – Relationship.

No one wants to have a relationship that is forced, fake, dishonest or uncommitted.  True Christianity is exactly the opposite of that.  It’s not hypocritical, nor is it a following of a set of rules.

It is living in freedom to be all that one was created to be.  It is having a way to be forgiven and restored.  It is Coram Deo.

How do you see God?  Do you believe that He values relationship or rules?  And if you like, please let me know of what you think of the song.   How does it speak to you?

The above artwork is the result of week four of the class “Kingdom Come” that I’ve been doing. I decided to embed my song, Coram Deo in it, because I believe the two fuse together nicely.

Sun Love

Sun Love

Can you imagine what would happen to a tree if it didn’t get sunlight? The sun is absolutely necessary for most trees to grow and flourish. It is needed for photosynthesis to happen, and in turn sugar is produced, which feeds the tree oxygen and then is released into the air (source). We need oxygen to breathe – to live.

The above piece serves as a spiritual allegory for me. When the sun doesn’t shine, I’m weak and droopy. My colors aren’t vibrant, but more like monochrome and depressive. I need the sun. When I’m far from it I suffer depression. I get tired and fatigued. I get irritable.

I want to be that big, lush, tall, strong, mature, beautiful tree. I guess that means I need to keep turning my face toward the sun and allow it to do its work.

How about you?

Music of my Heart (Gogyohka)

Music of my heart

My heart beats

to the rhythm of your drum

and sings

to the tune of your spirit

as I submit my all to you

I fell in love with the various poetry forms a number of months ago, thanks to this girl. I started following her blog and was smitten by all the different poetry forms she used to write her own creations. Thanks to her, I have been challenging myself to push myself just that tad bit further with writing poems under the constraints of rules and order.

Is there something that your heart beats too? Would love to know….. 🙂

Words, Mind, Emotions

Words, Mind, EmotionsHave you ever felt like you just can’t seem to calm your mind? Too many words and thoughts popping in and out? Have your raging thoughts ever effected your emotions, making it difficult for you to find stillness and peace? I have.

Just yesterday I was trying to have my quiet time with God in my secret place. I tried sitting and praying. I tried reading. I was restless in mind and thought. I just couldn’t seem to break through. Then I got up and started to pace and pray to see if I could somehow get focus and concentration happening in my mind. Didn’t work.

As a Christian, I believe that there is a spiritual world, and that the weapons I fight with are not carnal or material. They are spiritual. Oftentimes, I feel that the battle is in the mind, which in turn, affects the emotions. It is up to me to choose whether I’m going to believe the lies that are shot like arrows at me, or if I’m going to believe God. I chose God, because He never lets me down, and I can trust in His word. Even when feelings are up and down, He is constantly stable.

Now you may not be a Christian, or believe in the spirit world, but I’m sure all of us have gone through similar experiences. How do you deal with bombarding thoughts and raging emotions? Do you go through some type of process, and if so, what is it?

The Divine (clogyrnach)

The divine

Do you believe in intelligent design? And if the universe, and all within it were intelligently designed, do you think that requires only reason and logic? If so, why would we, humans, have such strong emotions?

I was doing some research on intelligent design and found a few quotes that really caught my attention:

  • “DNA is like a computer program but far, far more advanced than any software ever created. – Bill Gates”
  • “The believer in the God of creation is the rationalist.”
  • “This most beautiful system of the sun, planets and comets, could only proceed from the counsel and dominion of an intelligent and powerful Being.” -Issac Newton
  • “We are intelligent beings: intelligent beings cannot have been formed by a crude, blind, insensible being: there is certainly some difference between the ideas of Newton and the dung of a mule. Newton’s intelligence, therefore, came from another intelligence” – Voltaire

I have always been an emotional person. Often times I’ve acted impulsively off of my feelings. This hasn’t always worked out well. I’m so glad I married the man I did, because he is a strong thinker. So then, he being the thinker, and I being the feeler, I guess you can say we compliment each other. I have learned so much during these past 10 years of marriage. Trying to not let my emotions guide me, stopping and looking at things rationally, recognizing that feelings can often blind a person and cause one to regret impulsive actions. These are some the lessons I’ve learned.

Being a Christian, I believe in intelligent design. In considering the fact that everything in the universe is bound by laws which have no choice but to obey, and the complexity and logic that is involved in order that the universe runs orderly and smoothly – I find it hard to believe that an unintelligent being could have done it all, or that it merely happened by chance.

I’ve often thought that humans are such extremists. We have a difficult time finding balance. I find that some Christians are very strong feelers and live their lives by emotional/spiritual experiences. Then there are others that tend to shun the emotional, because they know that feelings can be deceptive and often blind people. They may know all there is about the Bible and be able to debate logically and intellectually about philosophy, theology and what have you, but are scared of having an emotional experience.

What I am learning now though, is that there is a balance.  If God made me with intellect and emotions, then there’s a reason for it.  I have had some phenomenal emotional and supernatural experiences with God, but have left the reason and logic off to the side. Now I find myself reading and researching out more of a rational basis for my faith. Because ultimately experiences and emotions can be found and generated in any belief system, but I want to know what is true and what is real. I used to read the Bible and pray to find peace and have an ‘experience’ with God. I don’t want that to go, but I want the balance now. The balance between reason and emotion.

How about you? Do you believe in intelligent design? Do you find yourself more of a strong feeler or thinker? Do you long to find balance between the two?
